Summer Entertaining on a Budget

I originally shared these ideas for summer entertaining as a guest post over on Design, Dining and Diapers. But since I’m in the midst of planning my son’s birthday party, I figured this would be a good time to remind myself and you how to save money on your summer parties.

Summertime around my house means lots of barbeques and family parties. As much as I love entertaining, it can get pricey to host all of these events. So today, I’m going to share some tips for summer entertaining on a budget.

Focus on one stand out dish.

Don’t plan a menu full of new, complicated or expensive dishes. You’ll end up frustrated and frazzled on party day. I like build my menu around one stand out dish and add some simple favorites to round out my menu.

One of my favorite summer entertaining meals is pulled pork in the slow cooker. Grab a couple bottles of fancy BBQ sauce from the store and pair with canned baked beans, fruit salad and potato chips. And a bonus…no standing over the hot BBQ or oven!

Or you could focus on a stand out salad, like this recipe for Greek Orzo Pasta Salad. Pair with grilled chicken, corn on the cob and watermelon for a light summer dinner.

Let Your Guests Help Out

As the hostess, we seemed trained to say “No thank you, I’ve got everything handled” when a guest asks what they can bring. But in my experience, if someone asks to help out….you should let them. If you want to handle the majority of the menu, let your guests bring some of the accompaniments. Ask guests to bring hot dog/hamburger buns, a tray with all the fixings for hamburgers, fruit salad, chips.

Be specific, but not too specific. Don’t give your guests a copy of the exact recipe you want them to make. Not that I know anyone who would do that (cough::mymom::cough!).

Decorate with What You Have

Unless you are planning an elaborate themed party, you probably have everything you need around the house to decorate for a summer party.

Mason jars filled with flowers are one of my favorite ways to decorate.

Or fill a large bowl with lemons and limes for a splash of color.

I’m planning a beach themed party of my son’s birthday in August. I plan on using clean sandpails (from the dollar store) as serving bowls. And decorating with shells and other treasures from our recent beach vacation.

Hit the Dollar Store

You can find tons of items at your local dollar store that are perfect for summer entertaining. Pick up paper plates and plastic cups and utensils. And bright colored table clothes and napkins.

Plus, you can find things like bubbles, bouncing balls or coloring books to keep your younger guests occupied and happy.

Think Beyond the BBQ

If hosting a full barbeque is out of your budget, consider a less expensive dessert get together. Grab some ice cream and have all your guest bring their favorite toppings for an old fashioned ice cream social. Or provide graham crackers and marshmallows and have your guests bring s’more toppings for a backyard bonfire.

Happy Summer Entertaining!

Safari Inspired Girls Night In with World Market

When I think about having Girls Night In, I think about good drinks, yummy food and kicking back to relax and laugh. And of course, every Girls Night In needs a little flare. There is nothing like a little decor to set the mood and turn an average night into an event.

One of my favorite places to shop for decor is World Market. They have a great selection of items to jazz up a party, decorate your house, or accessorize yourself. They also have an amazing food and beverage section with treats from all over the world.

I headed to World Market to check out their new Kingdom Animalia Collection. This collection is inspired by an African safari and has some really amazing items.

I love the neutral colors of this collection with the pops of animal print and rich colors.

I want this entire display of globes for my living room.

How fantastic is this steamer trunk/bar? So many fun options for ways you could use this.

I had such a great time shopping at World Market. One of my favorite things about World Market is their selection of “basic” pieces. They have so many great glasses, serving dishes, and neutral accessories that you can easily mix and match with their featured collections.

I spent forever in the store just trying to narrow down my choices. I wanted it all! After over an hour, I finally had the perfect items to create a gorgeous table for my Girls Night In.

I just love how this turned out. It’s exotic, refreshing and fun all at the same time.

I love this bobble head giraffe. And he was as steal at $12.99. And I like how he looks like he is ready to dive into the cucumbers. And check out that cute bowl. Each one was a little different and I chose one with a lighter pattern to contrast the table runner.

I used two napkins to create the table runner. And at $6.50 for two, they were about 1/3 of the cost of a full table runner. Score.

Of course I had to check out the clearance sections around the store and I found the palms leaves for Buy One, Get One Free.

The orange lantern and the white dip bowl are two of those “basic” items I was talking about before. They were just $2.99 a piece and I’ll use them over and over again.

Glasses were just $1.99. And the impressions in the glass add great character.

And I couldn’t resist these great elephant coasters. They add the perfect pops of color and texture to my table.

My best friend’s mom calls gin & tonic a “lovely ladies summer drink” and I couldn’t agree more. It is the perfect refreshing drink for a warm summer night. I picked up a couple bottles of interesting tonic water and some sparkling meyer lemon soda for the non-gin drinkers.

Because gin & tonic is such a light drink, I wanted to keep my snacks light as well. I picked up some Ras El Hanout spice mix at World Market and made this amazing carrot dip (recipe coming tomorrow) with it. Seriously, this dip is to die for and it doesn’t hurt that the color goes perfect with my theme. I served it with sliced cucumbers and crackers.

World Market had everything I needed to create a “wild” Girls Night In. From decorations to drinks to food, I found it all. If you are headed to World Market this week, be sure to check out your Sunday paper for the World Market ad which contains a $10 off $30 purchase coupon.

New Year’s Eve Appetizer: Olive Penguins

Looking to make your New Year’s Eve bash a “black tie affair”? These adorable olive penguins will add class to any party (even if you are just hanging out in your pjs with the kids!). I made these for my nephew’s penguin themed Winter One-derland birthday party. They are a bit time consuming, but so cute that I think they are worth the extra effort.

You will need:

1 can small olives
1 can extra large olives
8 oz cream cheese (I used Garden Vegetable flavor)
4 carrots
1 jar roasted red bell pepper
Toothpicks

Bring the cream cheese to room temperature. I put the cream cheese in my cake decorating gun with the smallest tip and that worked really well to fill the olives.

Cut a triangle notch out of the carrot (set aside). Place the large part of the carrot on the toothpick to create the feet.

Fill the extra large olive with cream cheese and place on top of the carrot on the toothpick.

Insert the triangle carrot into the small slit on the end of the small olive to create the beak. Stick on to toothpick.

Cut a thin piece of red bell pepper and wrap around the olive to create a scarf.

Repeat about 3 dozen times! I found it worked best to create an assembly line and work on one stage at a time.

Winter ONE-derland Party + A Giveaway

My sweet nephew had his first birthday this past weekend. He looks pretty jazzed about it, doesn’t he?

My sister decided on a Winter One-derland theme and went all out creating an awesome party! I just had to share all of her great ideas and the creative genius behind some of the elements she used to bring the party together.

It started with these adorable invitations from Pickle Potamas Press.

These invites are totally customizable and sent to you as a jpeg file. My sister had hers printed at Costco and paid just $0.30 per invite. A much more frugal option that buying custom invitations.

The majority of the decorations were created by the ladies at Pinwheel Lane. They make the absolute cutest party flair I have ever seen.

Each number had a mini clothespin on the back for clipping a month picture on.

And of course the food and drinks had to fit with the theme.

My contribution to the party was making these (labor intensive!) olive penguins. Instructions coming soon.

Hot Chocolate Bar. Whipping Cream Vodka, anyone?

Igloo Cake.

The super cute cupcake sticks from Pinwheel Lane made up for the really shoddy frosting job we did on the cupcakes.

And no party is complete without favors.

For the kids, she had penguin sippy cups and bags of fishy crackers.

And bags will with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Tied with another piece of party flair from Pinwheel Lane.

Seriously, have you ever seen a cuter party? Nice work, Sis!

I was so impressed by the talents of the ladies at Pickle Potamus Press and Pinwheel Lane that I asked if they would be willing to offer one Simply Frugal Mom a chance to put together their own super adorable party!

Octoberfest Open House Menu

My mom, sister and I threw a party this weekend to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday. We did an Octoberfest theme with beer tasting and lots of German food. It was an open house so we chose menu items that could stay warm in crock pots all evening.

I know it’s the last day of October and you may not be planning an “Octoberfest” party anytime soon, but I think these are great recipes for any fall party. Or choose a couple for a hearty dinner.

German Potato Salad

Sauerkraut and Apples

Red Cabbage with Sausage

Honey Mustard Pork Loin

Blue Moon Cupcakes

We also served:

Beer Brats

Smoked German Sausage

Pretzels with Mustard

Pickled Veggies

Apple Strudel

The Red Cabbage with Sausage with definitely my favorite. Perfectly sweet and spicy. And the Blue Moon cupcakes are to die for. If nothing else, make a batch of the frosting and eat it with a spoon. Bliss!

A Some-What Frugal Wedding Shower

My sister and I threw a wedding shower a couple weekends ago for Lindsey, the soon-to-be wife of our cousin Ryan. Ryan and Lindsey are having a 1940′s vintage inspired wedding next month and we wanted to pull that idea into the wedding shower. Everything turned out so beautifully that I just have to share.

I picked up some perfect invitations at Target back in March! They were on 75% off clearance and only cost $0.98 per pack. They were printed on recycled paper and fit with our color scheme perfectly.

We bought three huge boxes of mason jars on craigslist to use for decorating. We used the largest ones for flowers and the smallest for candles. We got the flowers at a roadside stand which also saved us a bunch of money.

We used the pint size jars as cups. I picked up some green striped straws at the party store for $2.99. I made a Beer Raspberry Punch which was pink and looked so cute in the jars. I had bought a flat of raspberries for $10 at the produce stand earlier this summer and flash froze the berries to use in the punch.

We wanted to give Lindsey a momento of the shower, so I picked up a Groupon for Flirty Aprons ($15 for a $30 voucher). We had all the guests sign the back of the apron with a fabric pen. These aprons are so cute to begin with and with the added personal touch, I hope Lindsey will remember the shower every time she wears it.

For the favors, we filled pint jars with beans and added a notecard with a recipe to make bean soup. I picked up the cheapest jars I could find at Walmart (poorly reviewed for canning, but perfect for our purposes) and got 15lbs of beans at Cash & Carry for $15. These were on the way to being super frugal favors, but then I found the cutest cards at Target and I couldn’t resist. I’m embarrassed to admit how much I spent on them (cough$0.50eachcough), but they completely made the favors and I got tons of compliments on them.

For the food, we went for ease over frugality which was definitely the right choice. We did save money where we could.

* I made the blackberry pie using blackberries from my yard.
* We picked up a package for chicken on 50% clearance to make the chicken salad.
* We used some loaves of bread that Franz bread sent me for the sandwiches (win your own here).
* Most of the rest of the ingredients came from Costco, which saved us money over the grocery store.

All in all, I think this party turned out great. I love throwing parties, but it can get expensive. With some advanced planning, I was able to save money and still throw a beautiful event. Thanks for letting me pat my own back (and my sisters’) and show off our hard work.
